Whilst leisurely driving along Nicholson Road with mummy Khong this afternoon, the traffic pulled to a halt! There in the distance as our eyes peered, we eventually understood why. A petrified little Jack Russell Terrier was racing up and down the main road, swerving the heavy traffic. Amazingly, several motorists and myself pulled up by the side of the road to help restrain this pup. Only after a good 20 mins of work out were a few of us able to catch hold of this pup. The trembling mortified pup initially aggressive suddenly became a cuddly soft hearted pup when she understood that we meant no harm.
How did this pup get onto such a large main road so suddenly? According to several witnesses, a yellow car had suddenly pulled up by the side of the road, opened its door and released 2 JRTs onto the roads. The other of which was restrained quickly by another passerby. Unimaginable story. Made up? True? I don't know.
Anyway, took the new pup home in the interim.. tried naming her several names. Princess...Patches...Charlie... no reponse. Then, Rufus! and her ears twitched. hmmm.. maybe that was her name? Gave her a bath, placed a jacket onto her, gave her lots of cuddles. In return, received many licks and kisses from "Rufus". Tried to socialize her with Justin and Ashleigh. Ash took to "Rufus" quite well although Rufus wasn't really keen. Very domineering kinda dog. As such, she just could not adapt to Justin (another dominant boy). Pondered keeping her but felt it would have been too risky keeping 2 dogs unfriendly to each other. Would be breeding disaster.
Called the RSPCA, they could not take her. Called the Gosnells pound and they reluctantly agreed. On hindsight, I SHOULD have rehomed her on my own. The ranger from the City of Gosnells finally came. I walked out into the driveway with "Rufus" tightly clinging onto me. She would not let go. The ranger's attitude took me by absolute suprise. To my horror, she just threw a LARGE THICK pink rope over this TINY dog's neck, snatched "Rufus" from my arms and retorted "cheers mate". As I stood along the driveway absolutely stunned and lost for words, the ultimate occured. The ranger flung opened the cage door and threw the dog in! There was definitely no need for this as "Rufus" had shown no signs of aggression. As I saw "Rufus" fade into the distance, my eyes welled up with tears. I was angry at the ranger, angry at myself for releasing "Rufus" to such unprofessionalism.
WHAT KIND OF RANGERS DO WE HAVE IN SOCIETY? And especially in the City of Gosnells?? How CRUDE to "Rufus" and how RUDE to me! Unthinkable attitude! Who would have thought that such behaviour would result from the very person/service that SUPPOSEDLY upholds animal welfare!! How now can anyone have any faith in such service anymore?
As a veterinarian, I have observed several attitudes towards animals. I would understand the need to exercise precaution and exertion when it came to restraning an agressive or fearsome animal. But how did "Rufus" in anyway deserve such rough/unsympathatic treatment especially after this afternoon's ordeal? Could you imagine anyone else with less tolerance for exertive behaviour witness this act of unkindness? Who would ever dare call the ranger for any help in fear that the animal might be mistreated instead of helped? I wouldn't. I would probably be more inclined to keep the animal then surrender it!! And if someone like myself who picked up a loitering dog was suspicious or doubtful or how the pound/rangers where treating animals and as such decide to keep the lost animal, how would the rightful owner to the lost pet ever have the hope of finding them?
If Rufus truly had a loving family out there that is missing her right
now. What would they say, how would they feel having their beloved
animal treated that way? I certainly know what I would say. DISGUSTING attitude from the female ranger of the City of Gosnells. Shame on you!
Having to blog my fustrations makes me sad. I keep thinking that I should have kept "Rufus", advertised her in the community papers and rehomed her myself. Should I "rescue" Rufus back from the pound tomorrow? Should I voice my fustrations to the City of Gosnells in hope that this never recurs?
I hope "Rufus" braces the cold winter night tonight. If she has a loving owner, I hope that they will come forward soon. Tomorrow will be a better day I pray. En and I might just decide to adopt her again.

| Australia (16) vs. South Africa (9)
Australians all let us rejoice
For we are young and free
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea:
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history's page let every stage
Advance Australia fair,
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands,
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands,
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share,
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair.

| SUPPRISE baby! Happy 30th Birthday. Booked you a weekend of fun in Mandurah! Googled "holiday homes in Mandurah" and this one came up perfect. The perfect holiday canal home. Wah... really living it up hey! Noticed though, I said, I booked (NOT bought) the holiday home.. hahah... one day will come when I'll be able to afford my own... soon.. soon. We dvd-ed, canoed, crabbed (2 crabs for the bbq!), bbqed, we had fish and chips, we drank Mandurah's chocha's famous hot chocolate and more! The birthday cake from cake's delight was awesome... finally we got the closest color to the western force's blue!
Oh and you SO WOULDN'T believe it!! On the way back from Mandurah, we
detoured to the Mundijong lobster/crayfish farm... Horhorhor.... The
story goes... We drove into the farm, and noticed that they were
advertising each lobster for $18 EACH... En, myself and wen started
whinning... "man prices have gone up! It was $13 each the last time
(like 3 years ago) and its now $18/lobster!" Whinge whinge whine whine
from all the 3 of us. Anyways, since we, the entire entourage, (en,
myself, wenni, ren and lindsay along with all our other car pool of
friends) were already there, we decided to hop along in to check the
place out. Long and short of it all... we were all a happy gleeful
bunch that strolled out of the farm. The apprentice had apparently
labelled the tanks wrongly! We got the $39 PER KG lobsters for $18
EACH!! WHoooooo! Each lobbie each weighed at least 1.2kg. Well, the
outcome of this deal was a good evening of indulgence - cheesy long har
meen (canto for cheese lobster noodles, something fusion). Just could not believe this.

MODES OF TRANSPORT for THE DAY
Weekends are truly hard to come by for a busy busy vet. However, when it eventually comes my way... it always ends up as a special day! A weekend truly to be remembered. So much thought and effort into planning this day. Check out the several modes of transport we had that day.. woo hoo! Weeee!!! Thought the scooting from Freo to Cottlesloe was challenging. Imagine hogging the road at 45kms/hr because you were too scared to go any faster. To top that off, try having a road train honking the craps out out you every other second because you were just too slow! Hmmmph.. GOOD FUN!! Well, don't think I want a vespa for my birthday no more. Cycling through the dirt was pretty amazing too! Tooks us all the way to the Mundaring Weir - spectacular. Great work out! Last but not least, the good-o Toyota Corolla. Man.. life saver. Thankfully we didn't choose the GUNGHO path of cycling back to Perth! Truly an exciting experience and a blessed day.
